Halloween Alternative Party Reflection

By: Aeron Perlman, Biblical Families Admin

A few weeks ago, the Ballard Campus hosted a “Halloween Alternative Party.”  The party was a smash hit, with games, pumpkin painting, two bounce houses, rock band and a huge maze! Overall several hundred kids came from families of MHC pastors, members, and non-Christians from the Ballard area.  It was a great way for us to open our doors to people who otherwise have no interest in Jesus or Mars Hill Church.

Since the party we have heard a number of stories from parents, kids and volunteers telling us about unique opportunities they had to share the Gospel with people. One story in particular shows the power of small things to plant potentially big seeds.

In the main auditorium, we had two large inflatable bounce houses delivered for the kids to jump around in. The company dropped the units off and gave our volunteers a quick run down on set up and operation. The houses were a big hit at the party, seeing constant use all night. However, the special moment occurred when the company returned to pick them up.

Our volunteers began to tear down at around 8:45 pm. The houses were deflated, folded and set by the front door for pickup. When the company returned to pick them up, they were shocked to see things torn down and ready to go. The woman who drove the truck said that no one had ever helped them tear down, much less go all the way to folding and packing up!

This was business as usual for MHC volunteers who time and again go the extra mile to make events special. However, this simple act of loving our neighbor made a huge impression on someone in the community who may have never heard of Jesus or been to a church. No one took credit for it—I couldn’t tell you which volunteers were where for cleanup. But when this woman came to do her job, Jesus was glorified through their service.

Worship in Weakness

Deacon Trisha Wilkerson

I despise weakness…
I get overwhelmed. Relational debt, housework debt and procrastinated project dread sneak up, drain the life out of me, and leave me feeling discouraged and flat out weak.  Those overwhelming moments reveal my true weakness. Yet too often, I deny it. Blind with ambition, I reach for my bootstraps, pull myself [...]
